Green Link Walk London - Our Guide

Part of the Walk London Network, Transport for London (TfL) has launched the new Green Link Walk, a dedicated 15-mile walking route which runs through 5 London boroughs from Peckham in South London, to Epping Forest in the North East. The route travels through nearly 40 green spaces in London, including Burgess Park, London Fields and Leyton Marsh, and was set up as a result of the continued growth of leisure walking in the city and the need for more dedicated routes and spaces. Here is our guide to the walk, including where you can find the Green Link Walk route map, what you can see on the way and more…

The Green Link Walk Route Map

The Green Link Walk route map is available on the Footways London website which plots the route and includes key points of interest along the way like the Tate Modern, Exmouth Market and Walthamstow Wetlands.

You can also find the route map on the Go Jauntly app which is a subscription based app available to download via Google Play and the Apple App Store. It details each stage of the Green Link Walk London route with maps, images and details of the sections and points of interest to help you know where to go.

A free downloadable PDF of the route and details of each of the 318 steps is also available from the Go Jauntly website.

Why Was It Created

The London Green Link Walk plan was set up to further improve walking routes, improve the wellbeing of Londoners and improve the accessible available to local green spaces.

Demand for access to better walking and wheeling routes increased as a result of the Covid pandemic, and this is yet another initiative from the Mayor of London and TfL to boost availability, accessibility and enhanced spaces for locals.

Where Does It Start & Finish

The 15 mile route runs from Peckham High Street in Southwark to Epping Forest in Waltham Forest. You can start and finish at either end, or join the route along the way.

The full length would be an excellent day out, through all sorts of woods, parks and areas of London. It would be some very good exercise for the full length, joining the path in your local area can be just as enjoyable.

If you prefer to see the sights of the city, the route from Elephant and Castle to the Regents Canal Towpath in Angel can be great for admiring the buildings. Or if you prefer spending time in the parks, start in Epping Forest and walk along the route to Hackney Downs.

The route generally goes through mostly quiet streets and plenty of green space areas.

What Can I See On The Route?

The full route runs through Waltham Forest, Hackney, Islington, the City of London and Southwark with plenty of things to see along the way.

Popular points of interest include St John’s Gate, Clerkenwell Green, the Tate Modern & St Paul’s Cathedral, Smithfield Market, The Regents Canal, the Hackney Museum and the Hounds of Hackney Downs.

The Walthamstow Wetlands and Epping Forest are both home to a wonderful range of wildlife. This part of the walk can be great for kids and families to see what animals you can see.

For a full list of points of interest and each green space, visit the map at Footways London. And Green Link Walk signs will provide extra walk guidance.

Green Link Walk Accessibility

It’s great for walkers but the route is designed to allow those with additional accessibility needs to enjoy the journey too.

Quieter streets, roads without bollards, streets with dropped kerbs, and bridges with ramps have all been taken into consideration when planning the walk. In fact, the route was designed in partnership with key walk and wheel groups including Ramblers and Sustrans.
